For eight months, construction crews have been busy at work constructing a new brand new kitchen addition to Southwood Elementary. The building was constructed in the 1960s and the kitchen that was used in the building was similar to a residential kitchen rather than a commercial one suited for an elementary school.

The addition is 2,400 square-feet of space that includes freezers and a refrigerator, a convection oven, combination oven as well as a 16-foot-long hood.

Additionally, a new fire alarm system was installed while the building was occupied.

Prior to construction, the land it was built on was a drain field - but now it provides meals to students daily throughout the school year. The addition officially opened in April 2024.
